The Guyver Sculpt

This is a bust I made for the Rascal art event, a gallery for vancouvers digital artists to show off their traditional work. Unfortunately this guy cracked shortly after baking. :( so I'll have him for display but not for sale.

Wednesday, 19 June 2013

I realise this guy is already all over the blog but I just had to put something together for the posed, game rez model. Next post to feature this guy will be an animation cycle, probably the idle, but I'll be putting this project down for a while,

A study from this morning..

It has been a while since I've added anything, Trying to post less WIPs until I can turn this blog into a straight up gallery of work, and then create a secondary blog for the WIPs.

A Link to The Past

Well, Link is finally complete! It was nice to take on a smaller project for once and spend more time on presentation. This piece was a blast to work on. Maybe it will turn into a series but I need a break from painting in zbrush for a while. It's very late and I'm not sure what else to say.

New Header

So I just reworked the header. I was going for something both epic and arcadey. Getting sick of looking at the old crest that was there before. Branding really is a lot of work. But rather than spend forever on it I'm deciding to go with sort of a Crimson Daggers mentality where you maintain an equal balance of epic, and 80's and that's all that's necessary.

Also, I partook in an "industry panel" back at Ai, where all of 20 people showed up, most of which were aspiring game designers. Only 4 aspiring artists! What I learned that night is that for designers it seems like networking outweighs hard work, where as for artists there can be no successful networking without putting in a ton of hard work... but, I suppose I would consider aggressive networking to be pretty hard in it's own right. Anyhow here's an image that was used to bring attention to the event which you'll notice adorns the new branding.

Edit, More Progress! polypainting:)

I was feeling pretty nostalgic last night and started this version of link from some old Link to the past concept art. First big change, HE HAS TO HAVE THE MASTER SWORD. If you find the image, heck I might as well put a link in I guess, he has some crummy sword. I started modeling that crummy sword and I was like, nah.

The Concept

Edit: Going to try and update progress on the same post instead of making new ones just to keep the blog a little less cluttered from here on out.

Darkwolf is pretty much complete, and about 2 months ahead of my very loose schedule, so maybe I'll be able to paint this guy before the gallery thing.Of course my paint's have to come in first from the UK and I also need to practice on lesser sculpts before I jump into painting this. I ordered some acrylics called, eh I forget. They are like warhammer brand paints but apparently better. I've tried painting maquettes with like your standard acrylic before but it get's so clumpy. Also I'm getting a bunch of washes and inks so hopefully I can get some cool effects without having to mix up gradients and stuff.

On a side note, lots of stuff has been getting 'finished' lately and there should be another pretty cool addition to the blog coming soon from my Ironclad work. Just waiting for the publisher to put it up on the media page. Which is pretty cool.

Game Rez Combatant

Here are the results of the baking process, I was pretty happy that I retained all of the detail, and by polypainting there was almost zero cleanup all in all. As I look back now I feel like I should probably reduce the facial topology a little bit because I'm just not sure it's 100 percent optimized, but before I do that I think I'll have a look at Street Fighter V's facial topology since I'd really like to match their range in motion in the face.

I've been thinking it's about time to move any further progress to a new blog for project Vengeance. Once I start rigging and animating it becomes more than just a modeling show piece, it's actual indie game development. Which is exciting. So I'll talk about that more when the new blog begins.

Darkwolf Update

I'll probably be working on this guy a little more frequently now because I really would like to get him into the Rascal Art Event in June.

Finally..

This took longer than I expected but The Combatant and his first pieces of armor are complete. Now I want him to have a sword, or a pair of swords or something. I'm thinking I should also probably document exactly how this armor is going to be broken up so that it's easy to understand how it's going to work in the eventual  game. I might wait until after the baking tho.

But For now here's The diffuse...
